Oncology Massage at The Supine Studio: Specialized Care for Cancer Patients
At The Supine Studio, we are dedicated to offering specialized oncology massage services to support individuals through their cancer journey. Since 2019, our therapists have worked closely with patients dealing with breast cancer, lymphoma, and liver cancer. We worked with patients undergoing treatment at South Carolina Oncology Associates, Prisma Health, and Lexington Medical Center. Our goal is to provide compassionate and safe massage care during and after treatment.
What is Oncology Massage?
Oncology massage is a specialized approach designed to provide comfort, reduce symptoms, and improve overall quality of life while undergoing cancer treatment. Traditional massage is often too taxing to the body during cancer treatment. Oncology massage is tailored to the needs of individuals with cancer or a history of cancer. Our therapists are trained to adapt techniques to the unique health concerns of oncology patients.
Techniques We Use in Addition to Oncology Massage:
- Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD): This gentle massage technique helps reduce swelling and fluid retention, which is common in patients undergoing cancer treatments, especially those dealing with lymphedema.
- Scar Tissue Mobilization: When appropriate, we apply careful techniques to address scar tissue, promoting healing and mobility post-surgery.
- Lymphedema Management: All our oncology massage therapists are familiar with lymphedema symptoms and perform surveillance at each appointment. Should symptoms indicate a transition to Stage 1 lymphedema, we have a Certified Lymphedema Therapist on staff.
Your Safety is Our Priority
At The Supine Studio, we take all necessary precautions to provide a safe and clean environment. We use hospital-grade cleaners, ensure proper air filtration in each treatment room, and, when appropriate, wear PPE to protect both clients and staff.
Our therapists closely monitor each patient’s condition throughout the massage process. If anything unusual arises, we will suspend care and advise you to consult with your oncologist. While we are not mental health professionals, we also check in on your emotional and mental well-being during your treatment, ensuring a supportive space to share concerns.
Lifelong Care After Cancer Treatment
Many of our clients continue receiving massage care after their cancer treatment is complete. This helps manage long-term treatment effects and promotes ongoing wellness. Since we’ve been with you throughout your cancer journey, we are uniquely positioned to transition your care from oncology massage to more traditional massage therapies. This continuity of care helps you feel safe and confident in our services.
Additionally, should lymphedema develop post-treatment, our Certified Lymphedema Therapist and skilled team are equipped to provide ongoing support and specialized care.
Understanding Lymphedema
Lymphedema is a common concern for cancer patients, especially those who have undergone surgery or radiation therapy. This condition occurs when the lymphatic system is damaged, causing fluid buildup in the limbs. Our Certified Lymphedema Therapists provide targeted therapies to help manage and alleviate the symptoms of lymphedema.
We are committed to helping our clients navigate the complexities of this condition and offer education, surveillance, and specialized massage to improve comfort and mobility.
