Lipedema Treatment at The Supine Studio: Managing Symptoms and Improving Quality of Life
We are constantly evolving our protocols based on the newest research. Whether you are interested in non-surgical management or planning on Lipedema Reduction Surgery, we're here to help.

What is Lipedema?
Lipedema is a loose connective tissue disorder that allows abnormal accumulation of fat, typically in the legs, but can also be found in the arms, hips, and abdomen. Unlike obesity, this condition disproportionately affects these areas, often leaving the hands and feet unaffected. At The Supine Studio, we use the Lipedema Standard of Care as a foundation for our treatment protocols, constantly updating our approach with the latest research presented at the Fat Disorders Resource Society and resources from the Lipedema Foundation.
Techniques We Use:
- Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD): Helps reduce swelling and fluid buildup, improving lymphatic flow.
- Myofascial Release: Alleviates tension in the connective tissue, promoting comfort and mobility.
- Vibration Therapy and Red Light Therapy: These are used to promote circulation, reduce pain, and assist in tissue healing.
- Cupping Therapy and IASTM (Instrument-Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization): Both techniques help address fibrotic tissues, increasing flexibility and reducing discomfort.
- Compression Therapy: We often recommend compression garments and pumps tailored to the individual’s stage and tolerance.
Monitoring Progress and Improving Quality of Life
At The Supine Studio, our focus is on improving your quality of life. For clients managing lipedema without surgery, we monitor how you feel after each session, adjusting therapies as needed. For those preparing for Lipedema Reduction Surgery, we use specific measurements to track progress.
Our goal is to reduce pain and improve daily functioning. While there is no cure for lipedema, emerging research suggests that certain non-surgical approaches may reduce lipedema tissue. We are currently developing a protocol based on this research and plan to begin case studies in early 2025 to further refine our treatments.
Working with Leading Lipedema Surgeons and Healthcare Providers
Our studio partners with leading lipedema surgeons and healthcare providers to ensure the highest level of care. We have worked with professionals from Hagopian Plastic Surgery in Atlanta, Advance Lipedema Treatment in Beverly Hills, and Lipedema Solutions in St. Louis. Locally, we collaborate with the Espinoza Vein Institute and Prisma Health. Open communication between our therapists and your healthcare team ensures a comprehensive and coordinated approach, especially for those undergoing surgery who need post-operative care upon returning home.
Educating Clients on Lipedema vs. Lymphedema
One of the most significant challenges in managing lipedema is the frequent misdiagnosis of the condition as lymphedema or obesity. While both conditions involve swelling, there are important differences. In lipedema, the hands and feet are usually spared, while lymphedema typically affects the entire limb, including the hands and feet. This distinction is critical for developing an effective treatment plan.
At The Supine Studio, we take the time to educate our clients on these differences. As part of our intake process, we evaluate markers for both conditions to provide personalized care. In some cases, individuals may have a combination of both lipedema and lymphedema, which requires a modified treatment protocol.
